Defence of doctoral thesis on hepatits E

Next Monday, 28th September 2009, María Isabel Casas Sanahuja, PhD student of the CReSA, will defend her doctoral thesis entitled “Epidemiology and pathogenesis of the hepatitis E infection virus in the Spanish pig livestock” directed by Dr. Margarita Martín Castillo.

Hepatitis E is a human infection which is thought to have the pig as the main animal reservoir. The possibility that swine might be the responsible of hepatitis E virus (HEV) circulation in these regions and what is more, the potential zoonotic transmission from pigs to humans, has to be further studied. On the other hand, the lack of a practical animal model has hindered a better knowledge of human and animal HEV infection mechanisms.

The main objectives of the present thesis were to go in depth in the epidemiological situation of HEV in the Spanish pig livestock and to develop an animal model that would allow a better study of the natural HEV infection in swine.

The event will be hold next Monday 28th September 2009, in the Sala de Graus of the Veterinary School of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, at 12:00 h.
