Study of the transfer of markers of bacterial resistance

Researchers of the CReSA studied the joint transfer of different mechanisms of resistance between Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli strains which can explain antibiotics resistance. A study carried out by the Bacterial Diseases Unit of the CReSA analyzed the in vitro transfer of different markers of resistance, intra-specie as well as inter-specie, between Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli strains isolated from intestinal samples from rabbit. The results of this study demonstrated the joint transfer of different mechanisms of resistance or the transfer of mechanisms that can explain antibiotics resistance non-related to the pharmacodynamics (such as the case of efflux pumps). A serial of markers were studied by means of molecular techniques that could not always explain the increased CMI’s observed in the antibiograms. The joint transfer of different plasmids could also be demonstrated. The results of this study belong to the work of research entitled “Study of the transfer of markers of resistance in Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp isolated from the digestive tract of rabbit”, that was presented by Ana Pérez de Rozas, researcher of the CReSA, on 10th of September 2009 (Veterinary School, UAB).
