Emerging viral diseases and zoonoses

Last 28th January, Dr. Francesc Xavier Abad (CReSA Biocontainment Laboratories Manager) offered a conference addressed to secondary school teachers entitled “Emerging viral diseases and zoonoses”.

The Educational section of the Catalan Society for Biology (SCB), subsidiary of the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC), together with the Institute of Educational Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICE-UB) organizes a training program for secondary education teachers every year.

The conference entitled “Emerging viral diseases and zoonoses” was held within the continuing education program for teachers.

Emerging viral diseases are new infections that appear in a population. Re-emerging viral diseases are infections that have existed from centuries or thousands of years and rapidly increase their incidence or geographical area. Social, economical and even political factors (starvation, wars, migrations, large scale town-planning developments, but also changes in sexual behaviour, diets, drug-addiction, individual tourism), medical assistance (either in excess or in deficiency), food production (global trade), environmental changes (drought and flooding, deforestation, global warming and its effects on populations of rodents, vectors and parasites), and adaptation and changes of the microorganisms (toxins production, resistance) are related among them to enhance or not these emergences.

Zoonoses are diseases that can be transmitted from animals (not necessarily showing clinical signs) to human beings; it derives from the Greek term zoon –animal- and nosos –disease-.

Dr. Francesc Xavier Abad reviewed some of these emerging or re-emerging viral diseases, zoonoses (Hantavirus, SARS, avian influenza, arbovirosis, Henipavirus, filovirus, etc.) and considered some critical questions regarding them.
