The CReSA is investigating the death and health deterioration of sheep and goats in Catalan farms

Source: DAR. As requested by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Action (DAR), the Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal (CReSA) is investigating those cases of mortality and health deterioration in sheep and goats in Catalan farms.

The farms are located in Barcelona and Girona, although the most affected area is Baix Empordà. It is important to remark that there are 1.800 farms of sheep and goat in Catalonia (equivalent to 70.000 goats and 609.000 sheep).

The researchers of the CReSA have carried out an exhaustive study during the visits with the aim of obtaining conclusions. At the moment, a preliminary study indicated that “a consistent relationship between the Bluetongue vaccination and appearing of clinical signs has not been observed”.

A specific cause of the symptoms (slimming and anaemia) has not been identified yet. The CReSA is still investigating the causes.

The symptomatology does not affect meat consumption and there is no risk for human health. Dead animals do not enter the food chain.
