Two projects will study emergent diseases transmitted by arthropods and their mosquito vectors

CReSA is looking for candidates having high academic expedient to apply for an early competitive PhD fellowship and initiate their PhD studies on 2011. Both projects will focus on the role of autochthonous mosquito populations on some emergent diseases of medical and veterinary concern (Dengue, Chikungunya, Bluetongue, African Horse Sickness).

  • Biology and control of vector borne infections in Europe. The European Union funded project (FP7) will investigate biological, ecological and epidemiological components of the introduction, emergence and dissemination of different arthropod borne diseases in Europe, especially those of great medical and veterinary relevance.

The PhD candidate will participate in the subproject of diseases transmitted by biting midges of the genus Culicoides, performing vector competence studies (experimental infection assays), population genetics, ecological studies and mosquito breeding. Part of the work will be performed on field and in biosecurity level 3 facilities (BSL3).

  • Dengue and Chikungunya in Europe, and other viral diseases transmitted by vectors and reservoir. The project funded by Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria (FIS) will investigate biological and epidemiological components of the introduction, emergence and dissemination of Dengue and Chikungunya viral diseases, both diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and of high medical relevance.

The PhD candidate will participate in the subproject “virus-vector interactions” dealing with population genetic studies and experimental infections with autochthonous vectors as the Tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and other exotic vectors as Aedes aegipty using different Chikungunya virus strains. Part of the project will be performed in biosecurity level 3 facilities (BSL3).
