CReSA strengths its relationship with the pig sector

Representatives of the National Association of Swine Producers (ANPROGAPOR), the Catalan Association of Swine Producers (PORCAT) and the Group for Swine Sanitation of Lleida (GSP Lleida) visited the CReSA to know more about the activities of the center and search for new collaborations.

The meeting was organized in CReSA on October 21, and was attended by Miguel Ángel Higuera, director of ANPROGAPOR, Ricard Parés, director of PORCAT, Vicens Enrique-Tarancón, director of GSP Lleida, Elena Novell, technical director of GSP Lleida, and Joaquim Segalés, director of CReSA.

The meeting was useful to demonstrate the utility of CReSA as a centre for research and services for the pig sector. The need to increase the CReSA relationship with the entities related to pig production sector at level Spanish was also identified. Moreover, it was considered that searching for mechanisms to approach the CReSA activities to the pig sector, and vice versa, and achieving a strong and enduring interaction are priorities for all parties involved.

Furthermore, visitors had the opportunity to visit the facilities of the centre, unique in Catalonia, where studies with viruses, bacteria and parasites that affect pigs can be performed.

CReSA, centre of reference in animal health research

The Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal (CReSA) is a public foundation created by the initiative of the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). CReSA is focused on research, technological development, studies and education in the scope of animal health, in collaboration with other academic and research institutions, and the private sector.

CReSA works to improve animal health and the quality and safety of animal products destined for human consumption. The researchers carry out research into innovative and effective vaccines; they study epidemiology, immune response and pathogenic mechanisms, assess risks for human health and develop standardized models of infection and diagnostic techniques. The work of these highly qualified professionals is expressed in a technological offer and services that combined with the cutting-edge infrastructures make up a standard-setting research centre.

CReSA is located in the UAB and has technologically advanced facilities to perform the studies, with two clearly differentiated areas: level 2 biosafety laboratories and level 3 biocontainment unit. This biocontainment unit enables the research team to carry out studies into pathogenic agents listed as notifiable diseases by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
