CReSA researchers involved in bovine tuberculosis diagnosis training courses

On March 24, precisely the World tuberculosis day, began the second edition of the training course "Theoretical, practical and legal basis for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis".

This course, along with several further editions, is organized by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and Environment (DAAM) of the Catalan Government and is co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and held at DAAM’s agricultural training schools. CReSA collaborates in its organization along with the Ecopathology and Wildlife Service (SEFaS) and Bovine Health Defense Groups (ADS). The course recipients are veterinarians authorized by DAAM to perform diagnostic testing of bovine tuberculosis, in particular the tuberculin skin test. It is a European legislation requirement that all authorized veterinarians perform these training courses.

The course lasts two days and includes lectures in the morning from Dr. Mariano Domingo who introduces the disease and explores aspects of its pathogenesis and pathology and Dr. Bernat Pérez de Val explains the microbiological and immunological basis of tuberculosis diagnosis. Later, Drs. Alberto Allepuz and Sebastian Napp review the epidemiological studies conducted from CReSA regarding the epidemiological situation and evolution of the disease in Spain and, finally, Dr. Enric Vidal reports on tuberculosis slaughterhouse surveillance. Also, DAAM staff explains the regulations in place and the legal basis of the official controls, eradication programs, and the wildlife-monitoring program that has been implemented. SEFaS describes the interactions between wildlife and domestic animals and the results of their studies on wildlife tuberculosis performed in the recent years. In the afternoon sessions the students move to a farm where cattle tuberculin skin test is performed on the first day and, on the second day, the results are read and interpreted.
