CReSA organized the first flow cytometry course

The flow cytometry course was given by the cytometry unit from CReSA in March of 2014 during four days. In total, thirty-one professionals participated, between which there was laboratory technician, PhD students and researchers from this Research Center.

The course had three central aims, in the first place, explain the basis that sustain the flow cytometry, in second, make those presents become familiar with the use of the equipment and, at last, present the different possible application which derives from this technique.

The training had two theoretical sessions and one practical session where it was included the sample analysis in the EPCS XL-MCL cytometer (situated in the Biosecurity level 2 (BSL2)) and in the FACSAria I (situated in the Biosecurity level 3 (BSL3)). In the practical sessions, the participants were divided in groups of 4 or 5 persons, making it possible to have a closely handling.

Throughout the course, the themes broached were:

  • Definition and history.
  • The flow cytometry components.
  • Fluorescence concepts. Fluorophore.
  • Compensation.
  • Data analysis generation.
  • Sample circuit inside the cytometer.
  • Parameters analyzable by flow cytometry.
  • Practical applications.
  • Marking techniques.
  • Immunoglobulins.
  • Most common isotypes in cytometry.
  • Norms to choose the antibodies.
  • Increase sign/noise.
  • Sorting: basic notions.

At the end of every session, the trainee receive a questionnaire as much for the evaluation of the knowledge, as to know the rank of satisfaction, also to value the efficacy and reception of the course between the diverse collective from the CReSA. The general valuation was very positive, standing out the high-performance of the course on the technical level.  Due to the satisfactory results, the possibility to launch new courses editions has been contemplate, as well as a future spin off in the form of advance short course about cytometry.
