1st Congress of the Colombian Association of Science and Welfare of Laboratory Animals (ACCBAL)

From the 2nd to 4th of December the first meeting of the Colombian Association of Science and Welfare of Laboratory Animals (ACCBAL) was held in Bucaramanga, Colombia. The Congress was held in the auditorium of the Cooperative University of Colombia, and it was organized by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the same University.

The title of the Congress was “Planning and management of animal facilities: Animal Welfare Basic requirement for scientific purposes”. Prior to the start of the Congress, the 4th International Workshop of the Colombian Red Cicuales took place, where attendees were able to work on the sample size in experimental designs.

The meeting tried essentially to provide attendees with a current view of the needs in terms of planning and management of animal facilities for both laboratory and farm animal species (from its architectural design and from financial through legislative points of view) in both Latin America, Europe and the United States issues.

Various panel discussions were held with significant participation by attendees.

In the field of biosafety and biocontainment, Mr. David Solanes, held two lectures:  the first one entitled "Biosecurity and biocontainment in animal facilities: designing for experimental models of high risk" and the second one: ” Biosecurity and biocontainment in animal facilities: Facilities Management in both ways."

Around 100 people were registered, most of them professionals working in animal facilities. A very interesting closing session including Poster awards also took place at the end of the meeting.
