AEBioS meeting with IRTA-CReSA participation. David Solanes Foz awarded as the most significant 2015-16 associate.

The Spanish Biosafety Association (AEBioS) held its 3rd national congress in Bizkaia Aretoa building past 17th and 18th October. With a large representation of staff of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/ EHU) and IRTA’s staff,  as David Solanes with the communication "Handling of infected arthropods in a biocontainment facility" or Xavier Abad with "What makes Officer Biosafety in a place like this?", both from the Animal Health Research Center (CReSA) and Ricard Carbó with the communication "Designing a teleost fish vivarium to work with nodavirus to test vaccines and treatments”, from IRTA Sant Carles de la Rapita. Various issues on biosafety, high biosafety biocontainment facility management, in university environments, but also research centers and private enterprises were discussed.

More specifically, in this conference, which attracted a hundred people, risk assessment on research was been vividly discussed along with other subjects such as mentored research and university teaching; how to organize the box (the building) in which we will handle that biohazard and the staff who will manage it; how technologically solve the risk posed by controlled breaks in biocontainment (inputs and outputs of materials, equipment, personnel); how the approach to biosafety changes compulsorily when the material at hand is different (hospital biosafety, plant, aquaculture, arthropod management); the gap between the social perception of biohazard and technical management of biosafety, especially in crisis situations and how to communicate both compartments, and finally, how to train, how to articulate a life-long education, as regards biosafety and biocontainment. In a very good scenario, Bizkaia Aretoa, the congress concluded with the appointment of a new board of association, ceasing the President, Xavier Abad of IRTA-CReSA and holding the position Iñaki Echeverria, SGIker, University of the Basque Country.

To emphasize that the award of AEBioS associated member with the most relevant contributions on biosafety and biocontainment for the biennium 2015-2016, by general poll among the AEBioS associates, went to our Head of Technical Services, David Solanes Foz.
